  • Well, since creating my Shoppe and this Instagram over three years ago, perhaps it's time to introduce myself! First of all I'm writing this while rain and thunder crash from outside my window, which excites me in a way I can't explain. My name is Katherine, I live in Lincolnshire, and I'm a romantic! (Sounds like a confession 😂) but it's true! There's this phenomenon where certain things will fire neurons in my brain and set me dreaming. If I hear a seagull, suddenly I'm a lonely lighthouse keeper peering through the fog with an old lantern, or when I see the low evening sun painting the hedgerows in gold I'm suddenly transported to the land of Faerie. I also talk to myself constantly. I can't count the times someone has called across the house "what?" And I reply "just talking to myself, sorry!" As a young girl I was fascinated by British wildlife, learning the names of trees, birds and toadstools, and often skipping school to do so. After school I wanted to start a career in conservation or tree surgery, I even have a chainsaw license. But something else was calling to me: Magic. Perhaps it's the romantic in me again, but when I read about witches and devils, folk traditions, faerie lore, archaic charms, myths and legends, the occult etc. etc. It thrills me. I'm happy I've chosen the path of exploring the strange and the mystical, where my love for nature can also endure. Some other various things about me: 🌙My taste in music is trapped in the 1970s 🌙My top favourite films are The Wicker Man, The Lord of the Rings and Rosemary's Baby 🌙I have a perfectly healthy obsession with David Bowie (don't we all?) 🌙I love turn of the century horror fiction 🌙I once was a presenter for local TV 🌙I'm currently learning Norwegian 🌙I have three chickens, and am happy being referred to as a henwife 😁 🌙It's my dream to live in a lonely old cottage someday 🌙The way I edited this photo looks like you'd find it in a travel brochure *meet the friendly locals and observe their quaint customs..*

  • This is the old stone quarry where Demdike, one of the Pendle Witches, met her familiar in the guise of a young boy dressed half in black and half in brown. He said his name was Tibb, and he would appear to her for many years afterwards in different forms, including a brown dog, black cat and a hare. When I arrived at this strange, looming and silent place, a rabbit emerged from the grass and pranced up the stone face of the quarry and out of sight (probably wasn't in the mood for making a pact that day 😉) . From Demdike's questioning - "and so she in hope of such gain as was promised by the said devil or Tibb, was contented to give her soul to the said spirit. And for the space of five or six years after, the said spirit or devil appeared at sundry times unto her about day-light break, always bidding her stay, and asking her what she would have or do." . Demdike, or Elizabeth Southerns, was the eldest accused and died in prison before her trial. It is my opinion that Demdike was a true cunning woman, who had worked for decades in the Pendle area, and whom many would come to for magical aid and healing charms. When another accused witch, Alizon Device was asked in her trial whether she could cure the pedlar she had recently made lame, Alizon replied "no, but Demdike could." Others in the trial give accounts also, of Demdike being called upon to help heal people or cattle. It's fascinating to me that this seasoned way-side witch with the knowledge of obscure charms could have easily passed into unknown history.   • Last week I went to the woods, as I often do, though this time I decided to wander on the opposite side of the track to my usual haunt, a smaller wood with a simple layout. I was drawn in by the dark greens of late summer, little toadstools and the tangle of wild undergrowth. Little did I know that once I decided to head home again, I wouldn't be able to find my way out! Everywhere I turned was impenetrable wilderness, nettles and thorns. I fought my way finally through a disused path, emerging covered in seeds and burs, only to find I'd gone round in a circle and was right back where I'd first gotten lost. The trees rustled with mirth, amused by my plight. I went hither and thither, running into dead ends and clearings with no discernible path. This is it, I thought, this is what it feels like to be 'pixie-led'. As folklore tells us, I instantly turned my coat inside out, and the next path I chose led to the edge of the wood and to freedom! As I said, these woods are small, no one has any business getting lost in them.   • Pan's Nightshade truffle by @emporiumblack13 ~ (This photo depicts the Forest Faerie Truffle, I didn't get a photograph of Pan's truffle because that day I wasn't thinking about photographing it, I was thinking about eating it 😉) To consume the essence of Pan is to accept adventure with child like wonder. He persuades you to be free, playful and curious. A short time after eating the truffle a new feeling washes over you, or flows out from within you. I was called to walk in the evergreen woods, a setting for a fairytale. I wandered aimlessly, drawn on by paths well trodden, the smell of damp earth and shafts of shimmering sunlight dancing on the forest floor. That's when he whispers, 'Stop, change your path' and I'm compelled to leave the track. I'm diverted into tangled wilderness, laughing as I push my way through almost impenetrable growth, leaves and seeds catching in my hair. Suddenly the branches part, and I discover a strange meadow of wild grass, completely hidden, silent. I settle down by an old mossy stump and melt into the land. Sometimes you've just got to let Pan take over. Thank you Seamus and Brighid!
